The End of the DayApril Soetarman

The End of the Day is a public audio installation that can only be played at sunset. It’s a guided audio experience about a moment many years from now, when you are looking back and reflecting on a life well-lived –about reclaiming a good future as a brave and hopeful act.

Make yourself comfortable. Call at sunset.

From the Artist

The original installation for End of the Day (2020-2023) consists of a series of engraved brass plaques installed on benches in public parks, facing the sunset over the water. Instructions: “The End of the Day / [local phone number] / Make yourself comfortable. Call at sunset.” It has been slightly adapted for the Worlds in Play location.

This piece began late September 2020 – a trying and chaotic time with the relentless news cycle and upcoming US election, which made it very difficult for many to plan or feel hopeful about the future. It was also designed to be covid-conscious: safe outdoors, in public, away from screens, only requiring a phone. I wanted to create something that would be a brief respite from the despair of the present, and about reclaiming a better future as a brave and hopeful act. This is not to discount all the work and hardships ahead. Instead, I would like to invite you to consider that someday in the future, you will be ok, and you will be looking back on the places you’ve been and people you’ve loved and the life you’ve led with something akin to joy.

The End of the Day actively ran in multiple cities across the country from 2020-2023. It was a NoPro Critic's Pick for 2020, an IxDA Interaction Awards 2021 Finalist, remounted by CultureHub as part of Re-Fest 2022, and now here at Worlds in Play for one night only.
