The Bridge: Playtesting a Democracy Ritual  Brandon Powers

The Bridge is a communal ritual that blends augmented reality, theatrical structure, and collaborative gameplay to guide participants from personal reflection to collective decision-making in order to create civic dialogue.

Using AR glasses, The Bridge combines the structure of a Socratic circle with the strategy of a board game. Participants respond to provocative prompts aloud, generating symbolic virtual objects anchored to physical blocks. As they speak, listen, and move through the space, they co-create a shared virtual environment shaped by their choices which evolves with each interaction.

In these two hands-on interactive sessions, participants will test gameplay mechanics, provide feedback on project vision, and support the development process. Whatever your background, we are excited to build with you, but these sessions will especially interest those excited by civic planning, board games, devised theatre and experiential design. This project is in early development and participants will have a large impact on its course.

Two sessions will be hosted across two days with different participant capacities and goals. Discoveries from the larger first session will be implemented into a more intimate second session.

From the Artist

This project is in early development and I'm excited to playtest and explore some possible structures together with participants. My goal is to eventually tour the project to community centers and arts venues around the USA before the 2026 election.
